CBD at European Community level
Biodiversity comprises the wild nature as well as the cultivated and domesticated species and their genes and the untouched as well as the cultivated ecosystems. Biodiversity aspects are thus not only a matter of nature conservation; it is the background for or influenced by many sectors of society: agriculture and forestry as well as fisheries, energy, transport and research etc.
A very important aspective of the Convention concerns access and benefit sharing of genetic resources (ABS). The European Community has set up an ABS information portal, which can be accessed on the top right corner of this web page.
This section contains selected links and documents related to several of the European Community institutions as well as to other institutions and organisations working at European Community level. The most recent policy document is the 2006 Biodiversity Communication of the European Commission, see link below.
Many users are not familiar with the structure and organisations of the European Union and Community. They therefore often just search for 'EU' elements. In order not to discourage such intuitive searches, this web site adds 'EU' to all links or other items related to any European Community institution.
